Mini Research

Find a theory/theorist about any of the lectures.

I chose Visual Culture.

J Berger said;

'Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognises before it
can speak. But there is also another sense in which seeing comes
before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the
surrounding world; we explain that world within words, but words
can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation
between what we see and what we know is never settled.'

J.Berger, Ways of Seeing. London: BBC 1972, p. 7

What I think it means;

We learn through looking/ seeing and copying/mimicking. We see things everyday of our lives and from this we can start to determine our own individual preferences and where we fit in the world. Despite seeing things all the time we don't always realise what they are or even that they are there in the first place. Other times we see things but just don't know how to explain them in words.

Visual Culture combines a few different studies and focuses on elements of culture that rely on visual images.
